Klaus Von Nichtssagend is representing me at the Nova Art Fair in Chicago. From the 27th-30th of April 2006. They will bring new works and works from the show “Nothing Stays the Same”.
Each year the juried exhibition is open to all and has been since 1857(I didn’t apply). And it seems that the salon hasn’t lost its grasp on the predictable and established. It is hard to judge the panel as I don’t know what they left behind.
Some photographs of whom the author I didn’t catch and a few paintings seemed to jump at me. I like it when the materials seem connected with the process of the paintings - both thought and work process. Anyway check out “Juice” an instalation of a Tennis Court hung on a wall with a ball-machine shooting oranges onto a tarp with a gutter leading them into a mediteranian style press and serving up a shot of OJ as a result. I like just descriping this instalation and count it as best in show so far.
Charlottenborg is great place to view art. The sun was out and it bluntly made its way into the show and eventhough it made it dificult to photograph framed stuff, it made it so much nicer to experience the show - feeling alife and happy touching the sun and not felling secluded from reality.
I first met Frederik Raddum in Cologne at the very half ass, but trying to be second art fair to Art Cologne - Art.Fair. He was there with Galleri Brandstrup from Oslo in Norway and I was there with Martin Asbæk pre-Martin Asbæk Projects. He had just started making his plastic sculptures and the main character was a dog, with a very strong simularity to Frederik himself.
Unfortunately I couldn’t make it to the opening and say hi to Frederik again, but thats life. I ran into Niels Bonde who said it was a nice evening. Stine and I dropped by the basement of Gallery Asbæk where Martin still shows his artists. The show was pretty cramed, but that is to my liking. It was also pretty scattered with a video, an installation painting, his plastic sculptures and then two sets of photographs. It seems Frederik is pushing himself in many directions. I wasn’t a big fan of his two big photographs. They just didn’t seem all that special, and with no coherent connections to the other photo-sereis of Road Kill snapped in holiday spots, it was hard to make much sense of them. They were big, though. The road kill ones I liked, espicially the the Palma Nova one, but also the dog one where the collar was pretty much the only thing left. I couldn’t see any conncetion between the sculptures and any of the photos except for maybe death. The death altar and the smoking death treesstubb. Not enough for me. The show came across as somewhat messy and not quite there. It seemed more of a bady curated studio visit than a gallery show.
The sculptures are not quite as nice as they used to be. I think he autobiographical element gave them a sense of truth or honesty, that the never ones lack. Espacially the ones where the humor is less pronounced. I think it is deficult to make sublime statements in plastic - ie. the tree trolley. The giraf’s though clearly has what the dogs used to bring. They are warm, fuzzy and cudly. The humor is very pronounced and would make every child laugh even the one inside all of us.
I like Frederik very much and I was glad to see his work. I hope that he can push on and make it through what ever is illing him.
A New York Thing has posted pictures taken by Ryan McGinley from the Whitney Biennial 2006.
Check them out.

Check outMary Booner
What an amazing stay.
Kids loved it. Cisca called it the Crazy Hotel and wants to live there forever. Sweetest coolest staff.
Fun to see Lola Schnabel again and Rene Ricard. Both of them proud owners of my work. Lola a drawing of an italian toothpaste she gave me, and Rene of a name tagged horseportrait. It made the horse portraits inspirred by the small white Madonna sculptures on blue background from the Italian renaissance. Alexia Kondylis has one too.
I have to admit that the casual atmosphere at the hotel rubbed off, and it seems like an awesome place to live. The people across the hall from us, where really nice, -two kids et al.
Great room, awesome chandelier and a view of the Empire States Building.
Off course Sammy Wilson and Rob Hult, Ingrid and Matt. Tanks for putting on the show “Nothing stays the Same”.
I had an incredible evening and I am so happy that so many friends showed up. Danish friends in town for the weekend and old school colleagues etc. My former Proffesor Dike Blair showed up and Joe Bradley, I missed his show at Canada - my stay was too short and too much family, but everybody was raving about it. It seems too good to be true, though, and I am sad to havemissed it, but maybe I can stop by his studio when I come back to take down my shoe. Dan Colen, took off time from his bienial work and stopped by. Ben Blatt, Lauren, David Schanavino who also just had a cool part in a group show at Bellwethers. And I ould go on from here to eternity, but my uncle and my aunt came from Denmark, with my parents and in-laws including a sister. Dan Colen’s auntie (Janice was looking smashing as always) and his sister Tal etc. Andreas Bauer, Mickey Beyer and the list goes on. Kenneth Willardt and Patrizia made it eventhough they had to go Andrew Krepps dinner at his new space. It was the best and I thank you all. Ingrid and her fiance hosted a small get together afterwards. Amazing food, winw and beer. Thanks the two of you. Peter Funch and Jacob Boeskov needs to get up there as well as Chriss and ANdrea from Vancouver, CA.
I had a great time. I can’t wait to come back.
In what turned out to be fascinating evening everything from the Danish Cartoons and the essentialism of freedom was discussed to drugs and teenagers was discussed over great Brazilian food, a wide range of excelent wine and finally scotch on the roof deck.
The merrits of artistic expression vs. life, happiness etc. took bow in front of the heated audience. Finally Guy Garcia and I ended up at an lovely empty Hog Pit. All nice and empty except for KC and the buzboy Miguel. If it wasn’t for those two institutions I would never come back to that place. maybe to serve chicken fried steak to my kids.
Anyway great night.
